Working for the Australian Border Force (ABF) provides the opportunity for you to actively contribute to protecting the Australian community. Whether you are working in the front-line or in a supporting role, the opportunities are endless. Some of the diverse functions you could be part of include:

  • processing passengers at an air or seaport
  • clearing cargo at an air or seaport
  • searching cargo to detect illicit goods such as narcotics, illicit tobacco or weapons
  • patrolling the Australian coastline in an ABF vessel
  • working at a district office in a regional location
  • investigating illegal border activity
  • analysing intelligence and developing border threat profiles
  • developing border protection and customs policy
  • assessing compliance with border and trade regulations
  • developing capability for the ABF.

As Australia's border security agency and customs service, we maintain a strong integrity framework. Our staff must meet a high level of professional standards in their professional and private lives. You will go through a comprehensive employment suitability screening process. This assesses character and integrity suitability for non-public access to ABF premises, information, systems and assets.

Eligibility

To be eligible you must:

  • be an Australian citizen
  • be 18 years of age
  • have at a minimum of one or more of the following:
    • a Year 10 certificate
    • a trade certificate
    • a Cert IV/Diploma level qualification, or
    • relevant work experience.​
