The ABF and its law enforcement partners have disrupted a prominent organised crime network operating in the illicit tobacco market after raids were conducted across the Gold Coast.
The ABF-led Illicit Tobacco Taskforce (ITTF) under Operation Lighthouse, has achieved a significant outcome against a criminal network's supply chain, cashflow and distribution capabilities.
Intelligence into the Queensland based network - believed to be linked to an outlaw motorcycle gang, indicated the group was illegally importing illicit tobacco and vapes as well as operating retail outlets across QLD and northern NSW.
As a result, officers from the ITTF, supported by AFP and QLD Health, executed warrants at two storage sheds in Robina and Burleigh QLD. Across the two locations officers seized approximately 1.1 million illicit cigarettes and 9,000 illegal vapes - totalling over $2 million in duty evaded and street value.
Illicit Tobacco and Vape Enforcement Commander Greg Dowse said these results reflect the continued pressure by the ABF and partner agencies being placed on criminal entities attempting to exploit Australia's tobacco market.
“We are committed to working together to break the illicit tobacco business model and holding criminals to account. This is being achieved though sharing intelligence, increased coordination and strengthened collaboration, including through new avenues for enforcement such as the Illicit Tobacco National Disruption Group, Commander Dowse said.
“Australians must understand that when they buy illicit tobacco, they are directly funding organised crime syndicates - every dollar in the pockets of these gangs supports violence, and other serious crimes."
The investigation into the criminal syndicate remains ongoing.
