Australia's SmartGate technology is about to become more family friendly, thanks to improved eligibility for children and teenage ePassport holders entering into Australia from this week.
The Australian Border Force (ABF) plays a vital role at our airports. SmartGates are Australia's automated passport control which uses facial recognition technology and a traveller's ePassport to verify their identity.
Arrival SmartGates have undergone several enhancements and the ABF continues to review the technology for further improvements. In this latest update of the technology, the eligible age to utilise an arrival SmartGate has been lowered to seven (7) years of age for all ePassport travellers.
This change means eligible families with children aged seven and older and also meeting the minimum height requirement of 1.1m can now use the SmartGates, making the arrivals process more efficient for family groups.
Clearance is quick and easy, with the accompanying parent/legal guardian answering relevant questions on behalf of the child at the Kiosk during step one of processing, before proceeding to step two, the SmartGate.
This two-step process has recently been upgraded at eight (8) international airports across the country, making them available to a wider range of travellers. The new Gen3 technology provides ABF officers with increased operational effectiveness and reduces of overall 'cycle time' for travellers.
In parallel, Australia's arrival SmartGates are moving towards universal access for all ePassports. This will remove nationality eligibility as a requirement and move to all ePassport holders being eligible to use arrival SmartGates.
ABF Commander Belinda Conn said the ABF is committed to a seamless experience for travellers entering Australia, with staff always looking for ways to improve and enhance the process.
“The ABF continues to invest in new technologies and improvements to border security and traveller self-service," Commander Conn said.
“While we recognise not all passengers will have a seamless journey, we know it's about listening to what we can improve and progress – providing convenience and consistency for families is something which should deliver more efficiencies for staff and passengers alike.
“Keep an eye out for 'Sammy the SmartGate Dog' at entry points across Australia, to see if your children meet the height requirements of 1.1m at the SmartGate.
“With planning underway to extend our Australia Travel Declaration (ATD) digital pilot to Sydney Airport, we are excited to continue to modernising our border clearance experience for global travellers choosing Australia or citizens returning home.
“As always, our ABF officers will be available and on the ground to assist travellers who may have questions or might require further assistance with the two-step process."
