Trade and travel industry engagement

What we do

The Australian community exists in a complex, evolving global environment that presents dynamic challenges to the way we live. The emerging and inherent threats in the changing international and domestic environment need input from individuals, groups, and organisations. We recognise that all community members have a stake in the outcome of government decisions and actions.

Guided by an engagement strategy, the ABF engages with government and industry partners to advance Australia’s economic interests. We do so by co-designing services and policies that reduce the impact on legitimate movement of goods and people.

This helps to advance a prosperous and secure Australia through supporting the Government’s trade and travel modernisation and reform agenda. We are focusing on building new, and enhancing existing partnership arrangements to progress major government border reform initiatives across the trade and travel domains. Involving stakeholders early and often maximises their ability to help shape and influence policies that will affect them. It also helps the ABF and government to develop better informed strategy and policy for the benefit of everyone.

These partnerships acknowledge the expertise and industry-reach available to the private and commercial sectors. As well as highlight the ways in which industry can help to support the Australian community through capital investments, innovation, and cost and risk-sharing.

Through several engagement mechanisms, stakeholders are actively engaged in the design of border reforms and solutions. Regular and ongoing engagement is facilitated via a series of national level peak strategic advisory forums which are convened throughout the calendar year. These forums bring together industry bodies, government, and other key stakeholders in relation to customs, trade and travel facilitation matters.
