A key element of the ABF’s strategy is to stop illicit tobacco and vapes well before they reach the Australian border. The ABF recognises that international cooperation, joint operational activity and information sharing are critical to making an impact on the illicit tobacco and vape trade in Australia.
The ABF has officers working around the world, partnering with international customs, police, immigration and regulatory agencies to stop illicit goods from reaching Australia and dismantle the organised crime groups behind them. We also work through a number of international organisations, including the World Customs Organization, to disrupt tobacco from reaching Australia.
Our strong overseas partnerships have helped prevent goods from leaving source and transit countries and resulted in the referral of suspicious consignments for inspection at the Australian border. These partnerships have also helped the ABF build the intelligence picture on the criminal networks behind the shipments.
