Ex-services personnel

The Department of Home Affairs and Australian Border Force (ABF) recognise that former service personnel have valuable attributes and unique skills that are transferable into many of our work areas.

Over the coming decades the Department’s operating environment will present a number of challenges and opportunities for which it needs to prepare. The future operating environment will create a demand for new roles requiring particular skills that are currently in short supply, including those involving cyber-security, policy, intelligence and counter-terrorism.

We have support systems and programs in place so that all employees, including ex-service personnel can have access to:

  • counselling

  • career coaching

  • health and lifestyle management services

Solider On

The Department of Home Affairs and the Australian Border Force (ABF) would like to thank Soldier On for inspiring us to enhance the support to ex-service personnel in their transition to the civilian workforce. On 7 September 2018, the Secretary of Home Affairs and the ABF Commissioner signed the Soldier On Pledge and became the 100th entity and first government entity to pledge their support. The Department and ABF are proud to support ex-service personnel by raising awareness of the skills and attributes ex-service personnel can bring to entities, creating supportive workplaces and promoting employment pathway opportunities.
