Immigration detention in Australia

We treat all people in detention with respect, dignity and fairness. While in an immigration detention facility, we provide appropriate food, medical, recreational and other support services, including mental health services.

Identification guidelines and other documentary requirements

Identity Documents (ID) for visitors

All visitors aged 18 years and over (adults) to an immigration detention facility must provide details of 100 points of ID in their application. This includes:

  • document type
  • reference number
  • date of issue

 Visitors are not required to:

  • make copies of ID
  • submit either the original documents or copies with their application

All visitors aged 18 years and over must present the same 100 points of ID stated in their application to staff before entering the detention facility. At least one ID must contain a colour photograph. Visitors will be refused entry to the immigration detention facility if they fail to comply with this requirement.

We do not collect or store originals or copies of ID.
