Immigration detention in Australia

We treat all people in detention with respect, dignity and fairness. While in an immigration detention facility, we provide appropriate food, medical, recreational and other support services, including mental health services.

​​​​​​​​​​Conditi​ons of entry

Conditions of Entry are in place for the safety and security of:

  • visitors, including yourself;
  • detainees;
  • staff; and
  • the immigration detention facility, including an alternative place of detention.

We require all visitors to acknowledge and agree to the Conditions of Entry.

You must observe immigration detention facility rules and follow any reasonable direction given by staff.

If you do not agree to the Conditions of Entry you will be denied entry in​to the immigration detention facility. Failure to comply with the Conditions of Entry during a visit may result in your visit being terminated.

Privacy Notice – Visitors to immigration detention facilities

The Privacy Act 1988 requires the Department to notify an individual of certain matters when it collects personal information about them. The Privacy Notice – Visitors to immigration detention facilities (APP5) - Form 1553, is your notification of those matters in relation to when you visit immigration detention facilities.​


​​Security and health screening

We will request all visitors and their belongings to undergo security screening as a condition of entry. This may include:

  • the use of hand-held scanners
  • walk-through screening
  • x-ray and substance detection.

Substance detection methods may include the use of detector dogs. An officer may request to inspect items in your possession and/or pass those items through x-ray screening.

You are not under any obligation to comply with this request. However, if you do not comply, we may deny you entry to the immigration detention facility.

You must not enter an immigration detention facility if you:

  • are feeling any COVID-19 or flu symptoms;
  • have tested positive to COVID-19 in the last 7 days;
  • have been in close contact with someone who tested positive to COVID-19 in the last 7 days; or
  • you are currently awaiting a COVID-19 test result.
Providing proof of vaccination is no longer a requirement for visitors entering an immigration detetention facility.​
