Non-citizens seeking to enter Australia claiming to be an Aboriginal Australian
The following information applies to non-citizens without a valid visa who wish to enter Australia solely on the basis of a claim they are Aboriginal Australians:
- The Australian Border Force (ABF) will not allow a person to enter Australia solely on the basis that a person claims at the border that they are Aboriginal Australian if they do not hold a valid visa.
- A non-citizen seeking to enter Australia in reliance on a claim that they are an Aboriginal Australian should make such a claim and have that claim resolved before any attempt is made to travel to Australia.
Non-citizens seeking to enter Australia claiming to be Aboriginal Australians must provide the Department with evidence to satisfy the following requirements prior to travel:
- Evidence of biological descent from Aboriginal Australians; and
- Recognition by an elder or others enjoying traditional authority.
The Department requires the above evidence to be provided to indigenous.australians@homeaffairs.gov.au.
